" I want to tell the story again " : Jeanette Winterson's (Re)vision of Prometheus

International audienceIn writing a " cover version " of the myth of Atlas, Winterson also alludes to the story of his brother, Prometheus. This article examines how the author rearranges the key elements of the story and injects fresh material into the existing myth; how she adapts the ancient myth to a 21 st century reading public, especially through a provocative and innovative use of language and parody. Winterson's gory version of Prometheus' punishment is tinted with mockery. The humanized Gods have a sense of humour, sexual needs and odd ideas. The entertaining quality of this original postmodernist version of the myth is mainly due to the hybrid genre chosen by the author to contain the rewritten myth, a short novel in which myth, autobiography, history and scientific discourse coexist. En choisissant de renouveler l'histoire d'Atlas dans Weight, Jeanette Winterson fait aussi référence au frère de ce dernier, Prométhée. Cet article se propose d'étudier la façon dont l'auteur réarrange les éléments-clé du mythe et injecte du matériau nouveau pour présenter au lecteur contemporain une histoire à la fois familière et inédite.
